With the advent of high speed broadband connection and the changeover of data from analogical to digital life has become easier. We can now hear our favorite songs and view our desired movies in all their glory. In olden days when most of the data were analogical, the copied version used to be substandard as compared to the original.
Those who have tried to copy from the VHS tapes will know. With the advent of digital technology the copied data is of nearly the same quality as the original making it hard to differentiate between the original and the duplicate. So what can you do if someone else steals your precious data and releases copied versions of the same released on the net?
Before you have the time to blink your eyelid, your precious recording will be available to all and sundry for free and there is nothing that you can do about it. Well on second thoughts there is something that you can do. There are special programs available that encrypt your data. These programs only permit the authenticated license holder of the data to use the same. This is basically what DRM or Digital Rights Management does.
It helps to guard digital files against copyright theft. Have you noticed that you cannot make a copy of the latest movie DVD that you have purchased? This is because the same is protected by DRM. Not just movie companies, most software companies are also using this protection system nowadays. Some software companies employ special protection routines but most of them are more or less based on the same principles that DRM is based on.
There are two schools of thought in here. While one agrees that the producers of movies and software have the right to protect their content against piracy, there is another school of thought that thinks that the original owners should be permitted to make up a backup copy, in case the original gets damaged. Used improperly DRM can cause lots of headaches too. Lets say that you have purchased a DVD of National Geography with a view of using the same for your school’s homework.
When you try to print a topic or a picture you find out that you cannot because the DRM protection is preventing you from taking a print out of the image contained in the DVD. Basically DRM was introduced to protect the copyrighted work of the author. Thanks due to rampart piracy and the advent of high-speed broadband. It is easier to copy a file and share it with others, illegally, over the net, unless the contents are protected with DRM.
